Algeria's increasing focus on intra-African trade and investment presents opportunities for international companies looking to expand into the continent. Investors should monitor Algeria's infrastructure projects, such as the Trans-Saharan Highway, and its efforts to diversify its economy beyond hydrocarbons. The AfCFTA will be a key driver of Algeria's strategy, and companies that can align with this vision stand to benefit.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has emphasized Algeria's potential to be a central driver of continental development, citing its strategic location, economic strength, and firm commitment to African economic integration. According to Abdelkader Dilleeta, the head of the AfDB Group office in Algeria, Algeria's unique position allows it to significantly contribute to the dynamics of continental development. Dilleeta made these remarks to the Algerian News Agency on the sidelines of the AfDB's annual meetings in Brazzaville.

Algeria has been actively working to strengthen its role in African economic integration through various initiatives. In 2025, Algeria hosted the African Ministerial Conference on Local Production of Medicines and Health Technologies, which resulted in the Algiers Declaration, a common vision for developing the continent's pharmaceutical industry. The declaration aims to remove regulatory barriers, harmonize procedures, and establish an African trade bloc to facilitate the movement of raw materials and pharmaceutical products. Also in 2025, Algeria hosted the African Startup Conference, which brought together over 200 African and international exhibitors and investors.

The AfDB Group's 2026 report on the "African Economic Outlook" projects Algeria's real GDP to grow by 4.1% in 2026, significantly higher than the previous forecast of 3.4%. The report also anticipates a 4.2% growth in 2027. This positive outlook aligns with Algeria's strategy to boost local production, export to Africa, and co-produce with partners, leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which offers a market of 1.4 billion consumers. To support this strategy, Algeria has modernized its investment and export framework, simplified procedures, and mobilized financing.

Algeria's commitment to African integration is also demonstrated by its focus on infrastructure development and trade. The country's share in intra-African trade is currently limited at 2.2%, with 91% concentrated in oils and mineral fuels, according to the 2025 African Trade Report. However, Algeria aims to make its trade with Africa a strategic lever. In line with this ambition, Algeria concluded $23 billion in transactions at the IATF 2025 in Algiers, representing the largest share of the $48.3 billion in total transactions.

Looking ahead, Algeria is positioned to further solidify its role in African economic integration through strategic infrastructure projects and policy initiatives. The country is actively pursuing the Trans-Saharan Highway project to improve connectivity and trade. Moreover, starting January 1, 2027, Congo will exempt citizens of all African countries from entry visas, a move that exemplifies the commitment to a unified and prosperous Africa, potentially catalyzing similar actions from other nations and fostering greater intra-continental mobility.
