Air Algérie's aggressive fleet renewal and route expansion signals a strategic push to capture a larger share of the growing African aviation market. Investors should monitor Air Algérie's performance on the new Kuala Lumpur and Addis Ababa routes, as their success will indicate the airline's ability to compete with established carriers like Ethiopian Airlines and Air Mauritius. The addition of fuel-efficient A330neos and 737 MAX aircraft will lower operating costs and improve profitability, making Air Algérie a more attractive investment in the long term.
Air Algérie received its fourth Airbus A330neo, named “Diaspora,” on March 31, 2026, at Houari Boumediene International Airport in Algiers. This delivery is part of the airline's fleet renewal and expansion program. The Airbus A330-900neo, registered as 7T-VJF, was delivered from Toulouse, France. The aircraft joins "Novembre 54" (delivered in November 2025), "Gara Djebilet" (early January 2026), and "Yennayer" (mid-January 2026) in Air Algérie's fleet.
Air Algérie has launched new international routes, including a direct service between Algiers and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which began on March 29, 2026. The airline also inaugurated a new route to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on April 1, 2026, and resumed flights to Budapest, Hungary, also on April 1, 2026. The Algiers-Kuala Lumpur route covers over 10,000 km with a flight time of 12 hours and 35 minutes. Flights to Kuala Lumpur operate three times per week using the Airbus A330-900neo. Flight AH3156 departs Algiers at 5:05 p.m. on Sundays and Fridays, arriving in Kuala Lumpur at 1:30 p.m. the following day; and at 8:55 p.m. on Wednesdays, arriving in Kuala Lumpur at 4:30 p.m. the following day. Flight AH3157 departs Kuala Lumpur at 3:30 p.m., arriving in Algiers at 11:15 p.m. on Mondays and Saturdays; and departs Kuala Lumpur at 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays, arriving in Algiers at 2:15 a.m. on Fridays.
The fleet expansion is part of a broader strategy to modernize Algeria's civil aviation sector, spearheaded by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Air Algérie aims to carry 9.8 million passengers in 2026 and operate across all 36 airports in the country. In March 2026, Air Algérie ordered 10 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, with five expected to be delivered from July 2026 and the remaining five in 2027. This order supplements a 2023 agreement with Boeing and Airbus for 15 aircraft, including eight 737-9 MAX jets, five Airbus A330-900s, and two A350-1000s. Deliveries of Airbus A330neos began in November 2025.
The Airbus A330-900neo can accommodate over 300 passengers and offers a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to previous models. The aircraft features a three-class configuration with 18 business class seats, 24 premium economy seats, and 266 economy seats. The A330neo also boasts the Airspace cabin, providing passengers with enhanced comfort, including more individual space, larger luggage compartments, a new lighting system, and access to the latest entertainment systems. Air Algérie is set to become a center of excellence for the A330neo, developing its maintenance and repair capabilities and establishing a maintenance training center.
Air Algérie's fleet now consists of 58 aircraft, in addition to 15 aircraft belonging to its subsidiary, Domestic Airlines. The airline also leased 10 aircraft in 2025 to meet rising demand. The expansion of Air Algérie's network and fleet is expected to improve connectivity between Algeria and key markets in Asia and Africa, supporting economic and tourism growth. The airline's strategic plan extends to 2035, aiming to meet the increasing demand for national and international air transport.
